Museum Closure

Monday, July 24, 2017 - 10:00am to Friday, August 11, 2017 - 10:00am

Sheldon is becoming greener. Between July 24 and August 10, the museum will be closed to the public so that energy-efficient LED lighting can be installed in the Great Hall. Also during this period, all of Sheldon’s galleries will be reinstalled to feature new exhibitions throughout the building.

Tour of Outdoor Sculpture

Sheldon Museum of Art will offer a walking tour of some of City Campus' outdoor sculptures at 12:15 p.m. July 27. The 30-minute tour will begin at the sculpture "Greenpoint" by Richard Serra, located on the walkway north of Love Library, and will end near the museum, where a work by Yinka Shonibare has recently been installed.

Study at Sheldon

Wednesday, October 4, 2017 - 5:00pm to 8:00pm

Sheldon’s Great Hall will be transformed into a great study hall for a night. Consultants from the University of Nebraska’s Writing Center will be on hand to work with writers of all levels, from all disciplines, and at all stages of the creative process. When you’re ready to take a break from your books, you can find inspiration throughout the galleries and fuel up with snacks.

Christin Mamiya, professor of art history, and Anthony Bushard, associate professor of music history, will discuss the conditions of post–World War II America that led to cultural movements such as abstract expressionism and beat literature.

“Revisiting Yellow Band,” a lecture by author Christopher Rothko

Thursday, November 9, 2017 - 6:00pm

Christopher Rothko, son of artist Mark Rothko, will share his perspective on his father’s career and artistic legacy. The talk will highlight the painting “Yellow Band,” which is part of Sheldon’s permanent collection and is featured in the exhibition “Now’s the Time.” Christopher Rothko chairs the board of directors of the Rothko Chapel, Houston and is the author of “Mark Rothko: From the Inside Out.” Tickets are available at go.unl.edu/rothko-lecture and are free for members of the Sheldon Art Association; $10 for nonmembers; and $5 for nonmember students.
